    Durgotsav 2014 was celebrated on Friday October 3 and Saturday October 4.

    Like every year this year's Durgotsav event was a huge success and we had a huge wave of attendance with new faces. Durga Puja in true vedic style, celebrated by all attendees, delectable food was served which was appreciated by everyone. Our Pujo, our Food and our event is our Pride. As always we brought the best Guest Artists who entertained us both days.

    Durgotsav 2013 was celebrated over two full days, Saturday October 12 and Sunday October 13.

    This year's Durgotsav event was a huge success and we had record attendance. Two full days of various events for all ages, durga puja in traditional style and delicious food were served. Top artists from Kolkata were brought over, who entertained and mesmerized our crowd.

    Saturday, May 19, 2012 was our Annual Picnic and AGM Day.

    Fingerlicking food, favourable breezy weather, connecting with friends and games... the annual picnic was all things fun this year. While unending jhalmuri, samosas, grilled chicken, hot dogs and watermelon kept the adda going, soon thereafter, football for the boys, Kho Kho and Kabaddi for the girls took centrestage. As the evening drew to an end, there was rice and "mangshor" jhol and a breathtaking view of the setting sun to keep company! A beautiful Saturday afternoon beautifully spent!

    Saturday, January 28, 2012 was our Saraswati Puja 2012 at DFW Hindu Temple in Irving.

    This year Saraswati Puja was celebrated on the actual date of Puja as per panjika. The whole day featured different taste of programs including Antakshari and a unique comtemporary presentation by local BADFW volunteers. The evening guest artiste lineup was a hit too, Sushanta Mallik enchanted us with his golden-voice along with talented troupe of Isaac Abraham and ofcourse "Aarohi" unplugged.

    In keeping with our tradition of hosting fun, wonderful and intimate parties, our New Year's Eve bash was hosted at a cozy, avant-garde venue with a sit-down white-linen dinner service. Our chef's choice dinner menu for adults and kids was unique and sumptuous. A frolicking fun time was had by all, with exciting music by our very own DJs that had most of us on the large dance floor. There were games for children and teenagers, and plenty of room for adda, and party games for adults.

  • Summer Event 2011 - Film Show: Lost Mother

    In association with ABAC (the Academy of Bangla Arts & Culture), we exhibited the critically-acclaimed film, LOST MOTHER, directed by Monalisa (Mithu) Dasgupta, at the FunAsiA Theater in Richardson.  Ms. Dasgupta used to be a member of our community in the past.


    The film show was followed by a Q&A session with the director, who was present at the showing.

    Sunday, April 30, 2011 was our Annual Picnic Day.

    Despite ominous clouds in the morning, the weather could not have been more perfect for a picnic. Andy's awesome music, Pyne-da's fishing, Abanida/Ranudi's jhaal-muri, "Aparna's manghso," Joy/Tapas' tireless grilling, Mashima's (Bipasha's mother) cooking — all memorable things! It was great to see everybody in good spirits, and a treat to meet all the newcomers! We haven't had such an enjoyable time in a while.

    On Saturday, February 12th, 2011, BA-DFW celebrated Saraswati Puja at the Cultural Hall of the DFW Hindu Temple in Irving, Texas.

    The cultural program comprised wonderful performances by our talented pool of local cultural artists. In addition, we were enthralled by a superbly enjoyable evening of old favourites from a variety of genres, original compositions as, well as delightful parodies and comedy by a duo of virtuosos, wonderful performances by our talented pool of local cultural artists.     Lunch was centered around our inimitable Bengali Khichuri that we have perfected over the years with our partner, Maharaja restaurant. As has become our tradition for Saraswati Puja, our volunteers cooked for our dinner right at the venue, complete with "gorom, gorom luchi and begun bhaja." Can you imagine getting a more authentic Bengali meal? The ambiance was truly reminiscent of a homely but grand Saraswati Puja, just as we remember it from years past!

    The Durga Puja is BA-DFW's flagship program of the year. Spanning a hectic, two-day series of multifarious events, Durgotsav 2010 was celebrated in typical style, replete with devotion, dedication, colors, sounds, music, and sumptuous feasts. The festivities spanned over Friday, October 15th and 16th, which coincided with the Asthami and Nabami teethi in India. As a part of the Durgostav celebrations, the Bijoya Sammelan was celebrated on Saturday, October 30.

    As we have always done, we ended up showcasing some of the best cultural events for children and grown-ups, with renowned artistes from India, Europe and North America.

    The guest artist line-up for Durgotsav 2010 included the following:

    The local talent staged a number of splendid shows, including:

    • Balmiki Pratibha - Tagore's famous play, staged by the children of the BA-DFW Bangla School.
    • Chitra - The Warrior Princess, a 'Rabindrik' musical extravaganza (dance-drama), based on Tagore's Chitrangada, featuring more than forty dancers, singers and stage musicians.   [See a small snippet of the dance drama on a YouTube video.  And, here is a YouTubbe video playlist.]
    • Kankal, the thrill-soaked, one act play, based a short story by Tagore, featuring a fictitious, yet tantalizing, intersection of this life and the hereafter.  [YouTube video playlist: Link.]
    • Abol Tabol, the musical. This was another production from the children of our community, in which they brough to life the immortal poems of Sukumar Ray, transporting us back to the days of our own childhood.  [YouTube video playlist: Link.]
  • Picnic and Annual General Meeting 2010

    June 5, 2010, was our Annual Picnic Day. The gathering took place at the Burr Oak Pavilion of the Westlake Park in Lake Lewisville.

    It was also the day on which the list of Committee members for the 2010-2011 period was announced, and the roster of planned events for the year ahead was shared with the attendees.

    On May 17, 2010, we celebrated the 150th birth anniverssary of Kobiguru Rabindranatha Tagore and Bangla Naboborsho (Bengali New Year 1417) with live music, recitation, skits, dances and musicals, at the Carrollton Plaza Arts Center.

    The feature presentations included:

    Roho Roi - A musical tribute to Tagore and a journey through his timeless classics, performed by the very talented singers, musicians, and performers of our own community.

    Nritya Sankalan - Dance and choreography presented by our wonderful dancers.

    Amaro Porano Jaha Chay - The young and promising musical troupe Kheyali from Austin presented a Rabindra Sangeet-alekhyo and modern songs to celebrate nabobarsho.

  • BADFW Film Exhibition 2010

    BA-DFW organized its first ever Film Exhbition at the Cinemark Webb Chapel movie theaters from Friday, April 30 through Sunday, May 2, 2010. Three new but very different films, each representing a very thin slice of the vast cultural matrix of the Indian subcontinental milieu, were exhbited. Two of the three directors were on hand at the screening to talk about their film, and interact with the audience after the screening.

    Bombay Summer explores the fleeting and delicate friendship between three young people and its eventual disintegration in the face of betrayal and personal loss. Set in contemporary India, the film subtly mirrors the turmoil within tradition bound Indian society as it copes with change and rapid modernization.


  • Salvation Army Volunteer Day 2010

    BADFW organized a volunteer event at the Salvation Army of DFW on Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, on February 27, 2010. We had about 30 volunteers who dedicated a few of hours of their time that day to discover the joys of giving back to the community.

    This was a particularly special occasion for the youngsters among us, in whom we take pride in instilling the values and virtues of of community work.

    We celebrated Saraswati Puja at the Cultura Hall of the DFW Hindu Temple in Irving on January 23, 2010.

    In addition to the usual puja ceremonies, the events in the afternoon included an Antakshati Context, with a number of teams, each comprising fours members from our community. The vent was organized with perfect precision, and great fun was had by all.

    As is typical at our Saraswati Puja festivities, the feature item on the lunch menu was Khichuri! Along with that, we enjoyed paanch misheli labra, bandakopeer torkari, bhaja, chatni and mishti. Dinner menu included gorom-gorom phulko luchi, aloor dom, chholaar daal, phulkopir torkari, polau, beguni, chaatni, and rosomalai.

    Mahasweta GhosalThe Guest Artists at the evening's cultural program was Mahasweta Ghosal. Ms. Ghosal is a talented Bengali singer, best known for her wonderful renditions of Rabindrasangeet, Nazrulgeeti, Atul Prasadi. Dwijendrageeti, Adhunik and folk music. She has two albums to her credit—Apon Gaaner Tane (2000) and Saaj Bihaner Gaan (2007).
