Early Life:
Srikanto was born in Kolkata, India and is son of Rohini Nandan Acharya and Kana Acharya. He got formal training in music from Dakshinee and learnt tabla from Ustad Ali Ahmed Khan. He started his career as a sales professional, but quit the job later to pursue a career in music. Utpal Chakravarty, proprietor of an old music store convinced him to sing for a cassette for Sagarika Music. The idea clicked and later he became a well known personality of Bengali music. Many of his private and devotional albums became top sellers of the year. A few of his most popular albums include - Bristi Tomake Dilam, Nodir Chhobi Anki, Ghuri and Jibon Chhobi. In 2004, Jibon Chhobi received best Rabindrasangeet Music Award. Three of his albums have won Anandabazar Best Puja Album of the year. His collaboration album, Pather Saathi with Rajeeb Chakraborty was the highest Selling Bengali Album of the year 2003. Some of the recent notable awards he received are;
- Mirchi Music Award for Best Male Vocalist- Rabindrasangeet (2011)
- Mirchi Music Award for Best Male Vocalist - Ajker Gaan (2011)
- Mirchi Music Award for Basic Album of the Year - Musafirana (2011)
- Mirchi Music Award for Rabindrasangeet Album of the Year- Uttoron (2011)
- Sangeet Samman : Government of West Bengal (2012)
- Sangeet Mahasamman : Government of West Bengal (2013)
Musical Inspirations:
Nikhil Bandopadhyay the Sitar Maestro and Ali Akbar Khan the Sarod Maestro are two of his most favorites. He basically loves North Indian Classical Music. Taking on from there his love for music knows no boundaries – He tries to listen to music from all over the World and collect the same.
And then of course there is Shri Manna Dey, Shri Mohammad Rafi, Shrimati Lata Mangeshkar and Shrimati Asha Bhosle. Madan Mohan, Hemanta Mukhopadhay, Salil Choudhury and Kalyanji-Anandji are his favorite composers.He considers Kabir Suman as the trailblazer for Contemporary Bangla Songs.
A household name with Bengali music lovers all over the world, SRIKANTO has won numerous awards, and continues to enrich the legacy of Bengali songs with his melodious contributions.
